This weekend was all about the 4th annual Student Celebration of the Visual Arts show at the Central Terminal. More than 30 schools and more than 400 students participated this year and the quality of the art work was excellent!

On Friday evening, we held a reception for participating teachers and event planners from 4pm to 7pm. After everyone was gone and there was still some wine remaining, Bill, Tracy, Yuri and I treated ourselves to a little candlelit (and moonlit) party until 10pm. How cool is it to have a gigantic train station all to yourself for a little impromptu party? We plan on doing it again this summer.

On Saturday, the turnout was a bit sparse, as we were competing against the Sabres game.

But we were treated to some excellent entertainment from the talented trio of Meghan, Eric and Jack on the mezzanine. These young people were very good and totally captured the attention of the visitors on hand. They have been asked to play at some future terminal events.

On Sunday, the turnout was much better, with people filing in all day. Everyone seemed to enjoy the art work and the artistic backdrop of the concourse.

I attended the premier of "Central Terminal: Saving a Buffalo
Landmark" at the beautiful Montante Cultural Center (formerly St.
Vincent de Paul's R.C. Church) in the Canisius College campus last
night.

Under the tutelage of Dr. Barbara Irwin, Canisius College students
Kirsten Jahn and Scott Richardson began their ambitious work last
December. Enduring extreme cold at the terminal, hundreds of hours of
filming, editing, compiling information and blending it all together,
these two did a fantastic job of telling the complete story of the
Central Terminal. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was
extremely pleased at the outcome. The resulting half hour documentary
was sensitive, informative and moving. A very mature effort from 2 fine
young adults.

There was a brief speech given by Dr. Irwin and C.T.R.C. President
Russell Pawlak, followed by a question and answer session with the whole
panel. There are plans to market the documentary to WNED and the rights
for it will be turned over to the C.T.R.C. Stay tuned to the C.T.R.C.

Video Institute Hosts Screening

Monday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m.

The Canisius College Video Institute will host a screening of their video documentary on the Buffalo Central Terminal on Monday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center.

Russell Pawlak, president of the Buffalo Central Terminal Restoration Corp., will speak at the event. The video was produced by digital media arts majors Kirsten Jahn ’07 and Scott Richardson ’09, who will also be on hand to discuss their work with the Video Institute.

The Canisius College Video Institute provides students with the opportunity to put their classroom lessons to work on projects that will benefit the college and the community at large. Students produce documentaries and promotional videos for local and international not-for-profit and service agencies that otherwise would not have the resources to tell their stories in this way.

The Canisius College Video Institute is funded in part by the John R. Oishei Foundation and directed by Barbara Irwin, PhD, chair of the Communication Studies Department.

Canisius College is one of 28 Jesuit Colleges in the nation and the premier private college in Western New York. Canisius prepares leaders – intelligent, caring, faithful individuals – able to pursue and promote excellence in their professions, their communities and their service to humanity.

University at Buffalo Art Show: Intersecting Spaces

A tremendous variety of art works dubbed ‘Intersecting Spaces’ will be on display at The Buffalo Central Terminal, 495 Paderewski Drive, Buffalo, NY 14212, on April 15th 2007, from 2pm to 6pm.

The exhibition is the culmination of studies for the undergraduate seniors in University at Buffalo’s Visual Studies Department. This is the third year that the thesis exhibition will take place in Buffalo’s Central Terminal.

The senior thesis exhibition portrays advance work indicative of technical expertise, initiated independently by thirty-five graduating seniors with mentoring from faculty.

Happy Dyngus Day!!

The celebration starts tonight at 5pm, with the parade starting at the
Broadway Market and ending at the Central Terminal. Pussywillows will be
on sale at the terminal, as will Flying Bison's special Dyngus Day
beer, food by Ulrich's Bistro Europa and the K Sisters.

The C.T.R.C. Building Committee has been hard at work this chilly
winter preparing the restaurant for use for this event. It is the first
time in more than 20 years that this room is illuminated and open to the
public. They have also been busy hanging vintage Broadway Market signs
in the room. It looks fantastic!

It will be the location of warming stations, as there is no heat in the
building and it's pretty chilly inside. Dress warmly so you can remain
comfortable until the polka dancing, food and beer warms your insides.

Come on out and enjoy a wonderful local ethnic tradition. I guarantee
you'll have a lot of fun!

Restoring restaurant scrollwork

The CTRC doesn't break for the cold of winter! The Building Committee has been diligently spending Saturdays cleaning out the former restaurant area in preparation to use the space again this year. In the process, some of our volunteers discovered original gilded scrollwork under a layer of paint and plaster dust.

`Central Terminal 2007 Schedule of Events`

Buffalo, New York February 26th, 2007: The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) is pleased to announce our 2007 schedule of events. Building on the success of 2006, in which the Terminal saw 8,000 visitors in September alone, three new events are being added this year: A Dyngus Day celebration in conjunction with St. Stan’s and the Adam Mickiewicz Library and Dramatic Circle, Hallwalls “Artists and Models” and a brand new to Buffalo “New York Wine and Cidre Festival”. We are also pleased to announce the return of the Buffalo Brewfest, Variety’s Haunted Halloween Bash, and the CTRC’s own Model Train Show.

The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation is celebrating it’s 10^th year of preserving and restoring Buffalo’s magnificent art deco train station. Formed in 1997, the CTRC reopened the Terminal to the public six years later and has hosted an increasing number of events each year since.

The complete events schedule is as follows:

Dyngus Day on the East Side - April 9^th – By popular demand, Dyngus Day returns to the Central Terminal after nearly 20 years! Join us in celebrating Dyngus Day on the East Side. Details to be announced shortly.

UB Senior Thesis Art Show – April 15^th - Details to be announced.

10^th Annual Spring Clean Up - April 28^th: 9am to 1pm – Come and help us prepare the concourse and grounds for yet another busy summer season! Gloves, work attire recommended and tools are always welcome. Food and drink will be provided.

3^rd Annual Student Celebration of Visual Arts - May 19^th & 20^th: 10am to 4pm - The SCVA is a showcase of student artwork, elementary through high school, from school districts throughout western New York.

Hallwalls “Artists and Models” - June 2^nd – Returning to Buffalo after a four year hiatus! Hallwalls will program approximately twenty installation artists who are asked to work within a chosen theme. One stage will showcase bands and DJs who will alternate throughout the night.

New York Wine and Cidre Festival - June 23^rd: 1pm to 6pm - Come sample the best that NY wineries and local hard cidre brewers have to offer at this tasting and farmers’ market.

Buffalo Brewfest – August 25^th(tentative): 2pm to 6pm - Come spend the afternoon tasting beer from local and regional breweries.

2^nd Annual Model Train Show - September 8^th & 9^th: 10am-4pm - Join us for the second annual train show, expanded to encompass two days this year. Attractions include operating train layouts, door prizes, and plenty of model trains and accessories for sale.

3^rd Annual Oktoberfest - September 22^nd: 6pm to 11pm - Celebrate Autumn in traditional Munich style! Enjoy an evening of music in the concourse "beer garden" with Western New York's most in-demand German band, the Frankfurters! Choices of beer, food, soft drinks and merchandise will be available. Guests in costume get in for free!

5^th Annual Doors Open Niagara 2007 - October 13^th & 14^th:: 10am to 5pm - Doors Open Niagara features towns and villages on both sides of the international boundary, opening heritage properties for all to see.

2^nd Annual Variety Haunted Halloween Bash - October 27^th: 6pm to 12am – Live music, full bar, and costume contest! Proceeds to benefit Variety – The Children’s Charity and the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation.

Buffalo Tours: 2007 Central Terminal Tours – The Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier and the Preservation Coalition of Erie County present guided tours of the Central Terminal. Tours will be offered on 5/6, 6/3, 7/8, 8/19, and 10/14. All tours start at 11 am and are approximately 2 to 2½ hours in length. Tickets are $12. Call 852-3300 for reservations.

The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation was founded in 1997. It’s mission is to preserve the historic 1929 New York Central train terminal on Buffalo’s East Side and help restore it to it’s former prominence in Buffalo’s architectural landscape. The CTRC is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that sponsors several public events and tours each year to support the continued preservation of this important landmark.

As we're gearing up for our 2007 season, the CTRC website will be getting a makeover. Those who have been regular visitors to the Terminal over the past ten years have seen the steady improvement to the look of the building, and it's time our website got it's own fresh coat of paint. Certain areas of the site, such as our message board, may be unavailable as we work on the transition. We're targeting the new site to be up and running sometime around early April, but be sure to stop by often for updates and other news from the CTRC in the meantime.

"Bashar Issa spent over two hours yesterday touring the Central Terminal on Buffalo's East Side – the same time we were touring the DL&W. Why? Because he is fascinated with the city's architectural gems. I asked Bashar what his thoughts were... whether the building piqued his interest enough to purchase it and he said, "I like challenges... and the Central Terminal is a challenge." I then asked him what he would do if he were to purchase it and he responded, "That's the big question... what do you think Buffalonians would like to see there? We spent the good part of the day discussing opportunities."

"NN: Why, if there is so much progress year after year, do we still have to wonder when structures like the Richardson Complex and the Central Terminal [currently up for sale at $1] will become functional components of the city?

BB: There is money allocated to the Richardson Complex. Some of that money has gone towards building the new Burchfield-Penney Arts Center. As far as the train terminal goes, all I can say is a word of thanks to the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation for acting as stewards until we can find a solution."

The Central Terminal Gets a Fresh, New Parking Lot!

The milling and resurfacing of the parking plaza at the Buffalo Central Terminal was completed last week. With the exception of one small area behind the building, you will see that the entire lot has been resurfaced. In a joint effort with the City of Buffalo, the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) hired NC Contracting to mill off three inches of old pavement layers and resurface the large, raised parking plaza. This is a major visual and safety improvement, and will go a long way in further establishing our desirability as an event destination.

Final sealing and parking line layouts will be completed in the spring, just in time to view the blossoming of 5,000 new daffodils and dozens of new trees throughout the Terminal's frontage. It will truly be a sight to behold!

Our special thanks go to NC Contracting, for a job well done, to Common Council President Dave Franczyk and to his assistant, Bob Sienkiewicz. Dave's and Bob's hard work not only facitated the repaving of the Paderewski Drive approach, but also the parking plaza, and we gratefully thank them.

The millers have been hard at work....

No, I'm not talking about my family! I'm talking about NC Contracting, the company that is milling and repaving our parking plaza. As you can see by these photos, the milling phase is complete. I'm not sure if they can pave this late in the year, unless we get a late indian summer, but this already is a huge improvement!

WNY LANDMARK HOSTS PREMIER PARTY TO BENEFIT SPECIAL KIDS

BUFFALO, N.Y., Witches, ghosts and goblins will be on hand Saturday night to kick off the first annual Halloween Party fund raiser for Women and Children’s Hospital.

“We’re hoping this inaugural party will turn into an annual, traditional event and create a new way to benefit the children of our community who need special help,” said Atty. Paul Cambia who organized the event

“What better setting for a Halloween party than this beautiful old terminal. The grand prize for the best costume is $2,000 and the party runs from 6 p.m., to midnight,” Cambria said.

“This fund raiser is just one more historical milestone for the terminal that has interacted in so many Western New Yorkers’ lives over the decades,” said Russ Pawlak, president of the Central Terminal Restoration Corp. Inc.

“The terminal will be all decked out in spooky decorations and lights for the party to be emceed by radio personalities Shredd & Ragan,” Cambria said.

Live music will be by About Face and a full bar will be available. Plus food from LaNova and Andersons. Secure parking is on the terminal property.

I just got off the phone with Yuri Hreschyshyn, local landscaper extraordinaire, CTRC and Broadway Market board member. He picked up 1,000 new daffodil bulbs on Saturday and is picking up 4,000 more today

These new bulbs will be planted immediately on the Paderewski approach to the Central Terminal and down Memorial Drive.

A special thanks to Coco Wozniak and Jim Pavel from City Hall for this generous donation.

Springtime in Broadway Fillmore will be alive with color! I can't wait to see it.
