Non-Profit Open House - July 22nd from 2pm to 6pm

To carry on our theme from last year's "Restore Buffalo", the CTRC is once again opening its doors to local pro-Buffalo non-profits and groups interested in helping the Buffalo revitalization effort.

As we found out last year, this was a great networking venue and an ideal way to get your mission statements out to the public.

The event will run concurrently with our "Cruise into the Past" custom/classic car show on Saturday, July 22nd from 2pm to 6pm. I have room for about 25 groups, so please RSVP to:

info@broadwayfillmorealive.org

If you are interested in attending. I look forward to seeing all of you again this year!

From Artvoice: Our Town, On Screen - "Prison of the Psychotic Damned"

By M. Faust

“Location, location, location” are, as everyone knows, the three most important things in buying real estate. But when you want to make movies in a city as far from Hollywood (both literally and metaphorically) as Buffalo, it assumes a different meaning.

Location is what distinguishes Prison of the Psychotic Damned from a never-ending slew of low-budget horror films (and with a title like that, what else could it be but a horror movie?). It was filmed almost entirely in the Buffalo Central Terminal, the astonishing Art Deco building built in 1929 that has haunted the East Side since it was closed in 1979.

The plot of Prison moves from the Terminal’s closing to the 1950s and has it do temporary duty as a poorly supervised holding center for overflow patients from a hospital for the criminally insane. (You have to take the invented history of Buffalo with tongue in cheek, like a reference to the “State University of New York at Cheektowaga.”) Those tortured souls, it is said, still haunt the place, leading a team of ghost hunters to spend the night there in an attempt to contact them, with predictably dire results.

Prison is not without its defects, but director David Kahn (who worked for years in various background capacities on movies from Children of the Corn III to The Mask and Titanic) comes through where it counts, with an unsettling atmosphere and some truly shocking sequences. And he makes the most of his setting; the long-vacant Terminal’s decrepitude gives it an eerie magnificence that a studio budget would be hard pressed to match.

Buffalonians will get a chance to see the film as well as contribute to the building’s restoration this Friday, June 23, when Prison of the Psychotic Damned has its premiere screening at the Buffalo Central Terminal. Kann and co-stars Melantha Blackthorne and Demona Bast will be on hand, along with band the Voodoo Dollies, whose songs are featured in the film. Food and refreshments will be available, and the screenings will include trailers from other upcoming films by producers RedScream Films and Buffalo Nickel Productions. Doors open at 6pm, and Prison will be shown at 7 and 9pm. Please note that due to nudity, violence, gore fx and scenes of extreme terror, no one under 21 will be admitted.

(Artvoice used our original Press Release, thus the 21 age requirement. Please note, the event has been changed to a 17+ event, with children admitted with a parent, to draw a larger audience.)

Courtesy of Caffeinated Gonzo, this buffalo, located at the University of Buffalo north campus, is a recast of the plaster-cast bronze painted buffalo that was located at the Central Terminal. When UB was looking to have a statue made for the campus, they did some historical research and found the original molds used to cast the Terminal's buffalo were still in existence.

The Central Terminal Buffalo recast at University of Buffalo

The Terminal's buffalo was the second to grace the steps of the concourse. The original, nicknamed "Stuffy", was a actual taxidermied bison that was an advertisement for the Buffalo Museum of Science. Soldiers leaving for war used to pluck hairs from it for good luck, and it was removed from the building after it started to look ratty. The Museum still has Stuffy, and loaned it to the CTRC for the 2004 season.

The plaster buffalo was destroyed after a truck backed into the pedestal it sat on and knocked it over during the period when the building was being stripped. It's memory lives on at UB.

State of the Project:

In the interest of outlining just exactly how far the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation has progressed in its preservation efforts, here are a few pertinent and important numbers and accomplishments:

- The 4 exterior clocks have been fixed and relit.

- The tower is now lit at night.

- 300 tons of debris was removed from the concourse and tower 1st floor.

- More than 4,000 tower/office windows were resealed with plexiglas and plywood.

- Fences and alarm systems help prevent access from unwanted intruders and vandals.

- Flat roofs, end caps and entrance canopy roofs were fixed.

- 3 concourse kiosks cleaned of debris and put back in use during events.

- The ticket agent office, Red Cap room, tailor shop, shoe store, baggage check room and train concourse exit have all been removed of debris and returned to use.

- The tower's first floor staircases and rooms have all been removed of debris and returned to use.

- The north mezzanine has had railings reinstalled and has been cleaned and returned to use.

- Hundreds of broken window panes have been removed within the concourse.

- Grounds have been cleaned of debris, lawns are maintained and more than 60 new trees and flowers have been planted.

- The traffic circle has been landscaped and is being maintained by the Buffalo Federation of Women's Clubs.

- M&T Bank awarded us $25,000 to purchase the original concourse clock.

- Several smaller artifacts have been returned: drinking fountain, clockworks, door knobs, kiosk signs, elevator signs, arrival signs and exit signs.

- More important artifacts have been located: concourse entrance lamps, sconce lamps, lobby lamps, mail box.

- Over 65,000 people, some from all over the world, have visited the Central Terminal in over 30 different public events.

- We have raised more than $200,000 in funding through public and private donations. 100% of that money goes to the project, with the majority of the funding dedicated to further preservation and maintenance (this does not include grant funding).

All of these facts prove to me that average people can perform miracles when they work together! And it also proves to me that we are Buffalo's favorite all-volunteer restoration project!

Attention: Change in Prison of the Psychotic Damned Movie Premier

The movie premier has changed from a 21+ event, to a 17+ event. Spread the word!

Thursday, June 01, 2006

The photo above was taken on the very first public tour given in the newly reopened Central Terminal in June of 2003. I call this the “Shock and Awe” tour, because even though 300 tons of debris had just been removed from the concourse and the tower’s windows had just been sealed, the conditions you found there could only have been described as “depressing”. I had been there for the first time in my life just the month before, for the Spring clean up, and it literally made me cry, as much for the condition as for the awesome spiritual beauty. From that moment on, I had been “hooked”, as only my CTRC brothers and sisters can truly understand.

I offer this article to you all because I am very proud of my CTRC family and of our accomplishments in the past three years. I think we all need a reminder that average people, like me and you, can make a difference in our community!

The Central Terminal is very much ALIVE! It’s now home to rental venues, such as weddings, university art shows (University at Buffalo) and corporate seminars (Red Bull), as well as our own self-sponsored events, student art shows, car shows, model train shows, Buffalo Brewfest and Oktoberfest.

The future is getting brighter for our beloved Art Deco train station and for the Broadway Fillmore district!
